Paul Hessling and Callie Coward work in the cataloging department at Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The digitization of American publishers trade bindings at the university began in 2009, when Paul submitted a proposal to have a select number digitized. His proposal was accepted and six phases later, there are now over 3,000 bindings digitized and more being added as they are acquired. The collection was the first to use OCLC’s CONTENTdm digital collection management system at UNCG which has now moved into Gateway which is powered with Islandora. On the cataloging end, we add binding descriptions, binding designers, illustrators, publishers, printers, genre headings and other detailed information about the books. The metadata is then recycled and is used in the Islandora records on the digital projects end. Sometimes this involves doing research on the books which we will share on this blog.

Christina Kraus led me to your blog entry on E B Appel. I need to read ALL the blog entries. What a great job of research you folks are doing. The technique EBA developed got me looking through my C&D collection. I must have at least half dozen that qualify. I call them Apple-skin covers. Best of the lot is the design by Ethel Reed, Hills of Song I think it is called.
